![]() Your seed is shipped in a moistened mixture of peat moss and perlite. Therefore, your seed is ready to be planted when you receive it. This is the same cycle it would experience in a natural environment before the seed would reach a stage where it could germinate. Stratification is essentially a dormant period which the seed needs to undergo before it can break dormancy and be planted. The pawpaw seed you have purchased has been stored in a refrigerator (32°-40☏/0°-4° C) for the duration of its stratification process for at least 90 days. This is not the only way to be successful but it is what we can offer from our first-hand experience. What are being offered are the best practices that have led me to my best germination rates from seeds. They can be successfully grown in USDA Zones 5 – 9. Growing pawpaw from seed is one of the most reliable ways to generate robust seedlings which will grow to be healthy trees living for years to come. I am not sure if they will survive the winter or not. The tallest one is about 3 inches tall right now and has four leaves.
